Policy:
On November 11, 1990, the Arizona Board of Regents approved a restriction against the “use, possession, storage, or display of any weapon” on all land affiliated with Arizona State University. The university’s definition of weapon is vague, leaving room for future infringements. According to PDP 201-05, the university does allow for personal safety devices, but by defining a weapon as “any object or substance designed to (or which could be reasonably expected to) inflict a wound,” the administrators have granted themselves latitude to further encroach on students’ rights. By enacting this mandate, the Board of Regents has stripped its students of their inalienable right to self defense. Unlike in other states where such laws come from the legislature, the state of Arizona has granted full autonomy to the individual universities, meaning that the Board of Regents made this decision on its own. ASU’s firearm provision grants no room for exceptions, leaving students at the mercy of the campus police. The fundamental right to self-defense should not be usurped by partisan college administrators, especially when they are not the ones who are generally affected by campus crime. We, the undersigned, hereby petition the president of Arizona State University, Michael M. Crow, as well as the Arizona Board of Regents, to repeal PDP 201-05 and restore the basic right to self defense.
