Policy:
On 08/18/2021, the Chancellor mandated that all UMaine students, regardless of vaccination status, will be required to wear face coverings in all indoor buildings on University of Maine System school campuses. We find this decision to be both unnecessary and unfair to the entire student body across the UMaine System campuses. Firstly, the vast majority of the student body here at UMaine has been vaccinated for COVID-19, and the number of students who are getting vaccinated continues to grow each day. UMaine has been one of the best universities across the nation in terms of limiting the spread of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic, to keep our students and faculty safe until the time comes when vaccines would become available for us. Reinstituting the mask mandate when most of our community here has already been vaccinated will only instill doubt in the vaccines that we have tirelessly waited to receive. This may result in the number of people getting the vaccine here who have not already done so to decrease. Additionally, one of the main reasons for getting the vaccine was to get effective herd immunity, so that we can return to some sense of normalcy here on campus. Mandating the use of masks indoors after we have effectively accomplished this does not make any sense, as it is no longer necessary to slow the spread of the virus. I hereby petition Daniel Malloy to return the rights of students on UMaine’s campus and lift this mask mandate immediately.
